Prologue

25 Feb 2001

Ensign Liz Mogan was asleep in her quarters, when something stirred her from her pleasant dreams. Not quite wanting to wake up yet, she stifled a yawn and opened one eye to see what had woken her up.

"Computer, lights", she mumbled sleep drunken.

After her room was sufficiently illuminated she tried to find the source of her distress. But strangely enough she didn't notice anything out of order, yet the young officer knew something wasn't right. Goose bumps covered her skin as she moved her elbows, so she could sit up right to scan the room.

"Is somebody there?" she asked the empty room.

After a few seconds, or was it minutes, Liz shrugged, and muttered to herself that nobody was there, besides her over active imagination. Nobody had the access codes to her quarters, except Liz herself. Turning around, she decided to try sleeping on the side facing the door, so if something did cause her to wake up again, she could see it immediately. Yawning she gave the computer the command to turn off the lights again, and a little while later she was back in Morpheus's arms.

Turning over in her sleep, she felt a rush of air close to her face. Liz woke up again, but didn't dare to open her eyes, afraid of what she might see. She came to the realization that the rush of air was somebody's breathing. Somebody was bend over her bed.

Counting to ten mentally she balled her hands to tight fists, then she jumped out of bed, her right hand soundly connecting to the face that had hovered above her. Ensign Mogan heard a faint Oomph which was followed a few seconds by a thud, clueing her in she had slammed the person, who had broke in her quarters, to the ground.

"Computer, lights", she mumbled for the second time that evening.

As her eyes got used to the light, she peered at the ground and saw the motionless body of Lt. Mitchell. Liz remembered vaguely she had dated him a few months ago. She wondered what he was doing in her quarters though. Was something the matter? Liz thought about earlier that day. Mitchell had mentioned he didn't feel very well, and Chief Engineer Torres had dismissed him for that day, so he could let himself be checked by the Doctor.

Liz sat down next to Mitchell's face, and observed him. His breathing was even, so she couldn't have hit him too hard, he probably would have one hell of headache when he woke up though, she mused.

Slowly she reached out towards Mitchell's face, and touched his cheeks. They were surprisingly cold, and the feeling gave Liz the shivers, she withdrew her hand quickly. Grabbing a tricorder Mogan checked Mitchell's life functions. He was unconscious, but besides that nothing appeared to be out of order. Liz frowned, and swatted the tricorder, then she scanned Mitchell's body again, but it gave the same readings as before. Frowning even more, she moved her hand towards Mitchell's eyelid, and lifted one. All of a sudden the pupil moved, and Mitchell's eyes shot open.

"Lieutenant Mitchell?" Liz asked cautiously

She got no response. Instead of that Mitchell tried to grab one of her hands and pull her near. His eyes had a wild look in them.

'What the fuck', Liz thought scared. 'Well whatever is going on with him I better call help quick'.

She stood up on shaky knees and kicked away Mitchell's grabbing arm. Then she made a quick scram for her commbadge, only to find it not being on the place she had put it at.

"Looking for this?" She heard Mitchell's voice say. Only it wasn't his voice. He seemed to be more distant then she remembered him, his voice much deeper. Mitchell had by now recovered and was standing and waving with the commbadge in his hand. Then with an evil glare he tossed it to the other side of the room.

"Look what do you want, and what do I have to do with it Mitchell", Liz said trying to keep her voice in check, and not to show any fear.

Mitchell didn't answer her question, but proceeded to take her in, as if she was an object of study. It reminded Liz of how Seven of Nine had looked at her the first day they had met. But Mitchell had nothing to do with the former-Borg. It was only now that Mogan could place the look in Mitchell's eyes. A look of hunger, not a hunger towards physical contact, but more like the hunger of a hunter that looks at his prey.

All of a sudden Mitchell dived forward, but Liz evaded him, her foot connecting with his jaw as she jumped side wards.

"Mitchell, come on, this isn't funny anymore", Liz said her voice now showing signs of panic. She tried to keep Mitchell who was lying on the ground in her eyesight, while scanning for a way out.

Mitchell moaned and stood up again, rubbing his aching jaw. He growled, reminding Liz even more of a predator. Her breathing increased, and a rush of adrenaline caused her to be not able to think straight anymore, and she made a run for the doors. All she wanted was to get away from Mitchell and the horrifying look in his eyes.

The next moment she was lying on her back, tackled by her assailant, her breathing ragged. Mitchell was on top of her, holding her hands above her head, effectively trapping her.

She didn't understand the look in Mitchell's eyes, even now that they were so close to hers. Thinking she was in for a sexual assault, she tried to wrestle her hands loose, and tried to bend her knees, so she could push him off her. She only succeeded in wearing herself out though, and looking at Mitchell she saw the look on his face by now had become feral. An evil grin tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Liz's eyes widened as she felt Mitchell's mouth go to her shoulder, tearing off the clothing with his teeth, then biting at her skin. Liz released a cry of pain, renewing her attempts to break free. She felt Mitchell take a bite out of her shoulder, and another one. As blood poured out of the bite wounds, puddling on the ground, Liz's continuing cries of pain filled the room.

Not able to withstand the pain Liz blacked out after a few seconds, never to regain consciousness again. The silence following was torn apart by a mad howl, that would have made even the most courageous Klingons skin crawl.

End of Windigo Prologue.
