Poem

11 July 2000

Half of a whole; Alive, but never truly there.
Conflicting emotions, simmering beneath shuttered eyes;
Conflicting ways, vying to the ultimate control.
That what we were, and what we are; What others see.

I release you from your restrictions, your fear;
And, in doing so, am released from mine.
I release you to find yourself;
So that I may find myself.

Both of us are caught in the struggle between worlds;
Each knowing 2 realities, 2 sets of fears and joys, 2 sets of laws.
Open your eyes, so I may open mine.
Accept yourself, so I may accept myself.

We must learn to accept who we are
Before we can be accepted by others.
Outsiders, regarded with fear and plagued with insecurities,
We found each other.

Outsiders, like us, once accepted, can find love.
Outsiders, like us, once accepted, are no longer outsiders.
Through acceptance, we can find love.
And through love, we can be healed of our scars so that we may live.
